Living the Word

Most of the time, I get ideas for my blog from whatever I happen to be reading. Right now I am rereading the Bible which I do every few years. I had forgotten how much I don’t like the book of Hebrews. It is a letter written to Jews in the first century and I feel bogged down with Jewish symbols that are supposed to help me understand the message of Jesus. It doesn’t seem to help me much. So I was glad to get to the last chapter. The author closes with a little advice on how to please God which I found really helpful and applicable to my world today:

“Keep on loving one another as Christian brothers. Remember to welcome strangers in your homes. There were some who did that and welcomed angels without knowing.”

“Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them.”

“Remember those who are suffering, as though you were suffering as they are.”

“Marriage is to be honored by all, and husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. God will judge those who are immoral and those who are commit adultery.”

“Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have.”

“Do not forget to do good and help one another, because these are sacrifices that please God.”

What a difference it would make in the world if people just lived what Jesus taught. Mahatma Gandhi said that even if one Christian did this, it would change the world.
