Prayer to a Small God

I watched the suffering woman
with the doom that looms over the unseen horizon
I wanted to give her my God
But my God was too small
one that lifts the daisy’s petal to Hercules
limps beside the Haitian runner
gasps in Pavarotti’s shadow

So I prayed: Dear Small God
Make yourself Big
be a Flood for her
a Hurricane
a Mighty Fortress
All Things to all that is her
